It’s heating up in the Coleman medal and the big boot of Lance Franklin is starting to carve out a lead. If students enjoy/love football then they will thoroughly enjoy mathematics linked to the weekly games of AFL football.
Who will win the Coleman Medal for 2016. The Coleman Medal is presented to the player who kicks the most goals in the season. In the Round 7 Blog we asked the question how many goals will Buddy Franklin (Sydney Swans) kick in 2016? He kicked 5 goals in Round 8 when Sydney played Richmond. Richmond won by one point.
In calculating whether Buddy will kick 100 goals you need to take into account that only six matches are played in Rounds 13, 14, 15 which gives each team a bye. This means teams only play in 22 Home and away matches. So in calculating the chance that Buddy will score 100 goals we need to find out how many goals he has scored so far and since he has 14 matches left to play calculate the possibility of him reaching this goal. Will he do it or will he be out booted by Thomas Lynch or Josh Kennedy?
This program motivates student learning through engagement with real life content as the season unfolds. Their predictions will be confirmed or unraveled, controversies will be revealed and dissected, and excitement will increase or wane with the highs and lows of the season. Will a local team succeed in bringing home the trophy in 2016?’ http://education.thewest.com.au/resources/footy-fever-2016
